How to Measure for an Under-Sink Organizer

Measure the narrowest door opening, the clear floor area beside the plumbing, and the height to the lowest obstruction. Then check the organizer with your tallest item loaded and trace its full access path. The cabinet’s advertised width is not a fit guarantee.

Under-Sink Organizer Fit Planner
Check one clear zone beside your pipes against an exact organizer. See the footprint, clearance limits and checks still needed before ordering.
Measurements stay in this browser. No account, email or saved measurements. A dimension check cannot prove installation, safe loading or a clear path around pipes.
Still check before buying
- Make a full-size template and test the entrance, loaded movement and return path. Turning or diagonal installation is not calculated.
- Check the real pipe layout, door swing, raised lip and every protrusion at all heights. Keep valves and service areas accessible.
- Follow the exact model's assembly, travel, mounting and load instructions. A green dimension check is not a fit or safety guarantee.
How this check works
Required width and depth are the product footprint plus the total extra clearance entered. A turntable needs a clear square at least as wide and deep as its outside diameter; projecting contents need to be included. Required height is overall loaded height plus extra height.
For a removable caddy, the straight entrance check uses its width and loaded height. For a turntable or installed pull-out, it uses width and empty height; assembly and loaded access still need a separate physical check. Installed pull-outs also compare required forward extension with available front space. Equal measurements are flagged because they leave no room for error.
Worked example: a 10 × 18 × 16 in clear zone, a 9 × 18 in entrance, and an 8 × 16 × 12 in loaded caddy have 2 in width, 2 in depth and 4 in height left before extra clearances. An 8 in caddy through an 8 in opening is an exact-boundary warning, not a comfortable fit. These are illustrative dimensions, not a product recommendation.
Measure the opening and the usable space separately
Open the door as far as it normally goes. Measure the narrowest route through the opening, including hinges and a center stile if there is one. Next, measure the clear space inside. A wide cabinet interior does not help if an assembled unit cannot pass through the entrance.
Rev-A-Shelf’s cabinet-fit guidance uses opening width, depth, and height and tells buyers to account for obstructions such as plumbing and hinges. The worksheet below expands that basic check into separate installation and everyday-use checks. [1].
| Measurement | Where to measure | Your result |
|---|---|---|
| Clear entrance | Narrowest width and height through the open door | W ___ / H ___ |
| Left usable zone | Clear width, depth, and height beside the plumbing | W ___ / D ___ / H ___ |
| Right usable zone | Measure independently; do not assume symmetry | W ___ / D ___ / H ___ |
| Loaded height | Tallest item resting in the intended tray or shelf | H ___ |
| Front travel space | Unobstructed route in front of the cabinet | D ___ |
| Other limits | Hinges, lip, hoses, sockets, handles, valve access | Notes ___ |
Draw the plumbing as an obstacle, not a center line
On paper, sketch the cabinet floor and mark the actual footprint of each obstruction. Check above that floor plan too: a pipe can cross the top of a tall bottle even when the organizer’s base fits underneath it. Do not move plumbing or disconnect equipment to make a storage unit fit. Leave shutoff valves and service areas accessible.
Try a full-size footprint before you order
- Find the exact configuration. Include attached baskets, handles, feet, and other projecting parts in the dimensions.
- Make a footprint. Cut paper to the listed base shape. Use a circle for a turntable rather than treating diameter as a narrow strip.
- Check the loaded space. Use an empty box or a separate height marker to represent the unit plus stored items. Do not balance heavy bottles on an unstable mock-up.
- Trace the movement. Slide the paper through the entrance and along the intended access route. For a turntable, inspect the whole rotation area.
- Close the door. Check the hinges, frame, handles, and anything stored on the door. A template is a screening aid, not proof that the real mechanism will work.
Compare the mechanisms in our turntable versus caddy guide. A removable caddy and a rail-mounted pull-out have different installation and clearance requirements.
Four mistakes that make “it fits” misleading
- Measuring empty height only. A tray fits under a pipe; the spray bottle standing in it may not.
- Ignoring the return trip. Check that the loaded unit can come back through the opening without twisting or lifting it into a pipe.
- Treating nominal sizes as exact dimensions. Read the dimension drawing for the specific model and installed configuration.
- Adding an arbitrary universal margin. Follow the manufacturer’s required clearances. If none are provided, allow a practical margin you can verify with a mock-up and ask the seller about ambiguous dimensions.
Questions before ordering
Can an organizer fit around a disposal or drain trap?
Sometimes. Measure each remaining zone at the height the product and its contents will occupy. An adjustable or split design still needs its own clear footprint; “adjustable” does not mean it fits every pipe arrangement.
What if the cabinet floor has a raised lip?
Check whether the unit can be lifted over it while loaded. A freestanding rolling caddy may need a different movement from a fixed slide-out. Follow the product instructions rather than assuming wheels will clear the lip.
Should I buy anything yet?
First remove items that no longer belong there and try a small existing bin. Keep cleaning products in their original containers and follow their labels. An organizer is not child-resistant storage. If you can already find and safely remove what you need, more hardware may solve nothing.
